This is an experienced position involved in non-routine and complex assignments. The Professional Engineer I works with the Project Manager to develop design concepts which are incorporated in final product by Staff Designers and Engineers. The Professional Engineer I, in role of project leader, may begin to handle some project management tasks but will primarily work on technical aspects.
Graduation from an Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) college or university with a degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology. Advanced knowledge and experience using computer-aided design and drafting (AutoCADD and Softdesk), spreadsheets (MS Excel) and word processing programs (MS Word). Advanced knowledge and experience in hydraulic and hydrologic engineering. Expertise in computer operation for engineering design programs and computer aided drafting. Continues learning process by attending in-house seminars and continuing education opportunities outside of office. Registered as a Professional Engineer.
The following duties are typical of the position but are not all-encompassing. Performs routine and special engineering work requiring application of standard techniques, procedures and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related project tasks. Exercise of engineering judgment is required on details of work in making design decisions. Assumes some responsibility for the direction of others. For training and development purposes, assignments may include some work that is a very complex and works closely with a Senior Consultant.. Prepares, or assists in the preparation of, engineering documents, details, schedules or reports as assigned. Provide schematic design information to Project Manager. Prepare preliminary task list. Incorporate design concepts from schematic design tasks. Coordinate internal design tasks with other design professionals. Select details which will be used on project. Document existing conditions and perform troubleshooting. Edit specifications. Attend construction meetings and produce site observation reports. Use computer programs and spread sheets for engineering analysis and presentations. Edit word-processing documents and understanding procedures for file savings, retrieving and transferring. Maintain neat and organized work area which allows efficient access to project information required by other team members. Handles routine contract administration. Prepares or modifies reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules, environmental impact studies and designs for project. Prepare addendum and change orders. Initiate additional service requests and turn over to Project Manager for submittal to client.
Has authority to perform complex design duties under the direction of the Project Manager. May not change the scope of work or deviate from any other part of the contractual document without Project manager approval.
Has authority to co-seal engineering work performed by the Professional Engineer or under his / her direct supervision.
